glitter in my soul: a writer's journey

When do you call yourself a writer?

I balk at calling myself a writer ... are you a writer as soon as you put words on a page? Once other people read your words? Once you're published? In any case, that's what I've decided to title this page. I hope you enjoy -- and if you feel like supporting me, I've included a PayPal link; or heck, check out the rest of this site, I make stuff.

I dream. I dream of a weeping willow, adorned with tiny fairy lights, each strand of leaves moving quietly in a soft wind. I sit upon a swing that hangs from a large tree branch of the willow, with soft emerald green moss at my feet. An ethereal tune hangs in the air, each note separated like stained glass.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve sat down to write anything … anything of importance, that is. Just like everyone else, I write things on the daily. Texts to my mom. Social media posts for Threads, trying to get sales.

But words like the first paragraph? That feels like a tiny bit of glitter in a rushing stream of sparkle that is hidden in my soul. I love writing pretty words. I absolutely adore a nifty turn of phrase, one that scratches an itch in my brain.

My journey to writing is just beginning. I don’t know where this will take me – I used to write poetry. A LOT. At one point in time, back in high school, I figured myself a songwriter … if a songwriter is just someone who writes words, doesn’t understand one bit of musical theory and can’t hold a tune worth a dime.

But can someone make money from writing? I mean, people do it all the time. Do people make money from writing poetry? I don’t really think that’s the question I should be asking myself though.

Even if writing doesn’t help my current financial situation, will it help my mental situation? Will it finally allow this deep ache in my chest to be eased, whenever the mere THOUGHT of writing comes to my head?

Maybe you should write, is what started this entire thing. Laying in bed at 3 a.m. in the morning, unable to sleep because I am worried about my small business being a success. Not wanting to even start on this dream because it’s too big, it’s too scary.

I think it’s time I get out of my comfort zone. And start releasing some of this glitter that’s on my soul.
